Abstract

By rebuilding the trajectory of Daniel Pedro Müller (1785-1841), a Portuguese military engineer sent by the Crown to his colony in America in the context marked by the deepening of the general crisis of the Ancien Regime, we intend to research how the production of maps and statistics created by this agent served the São Paulo ruling elite as governmental tools in the subsequent period. In addition, we also intend to analyze how the successive political conjunctures - Brazilian Independence, abdication of its first emperor and the constitutional reform of 1834 - ended up determining the production of this professional and reveals what was the new concerning of the São Paulo government elite regarding to the knowledge and occupation of the geographical space they were in charge of.By following the trajectory of this military engineer, educated in the best schools of Lisbon and legitimate son of Pombal's policy, we intend to demonstrate how his performance, through the production of maps and statistics, ended up being much more important to the Brazilian and São Paulo politics by the second quarter of 19th century.
