Abstract The present project supported by FAPESP has among its goals, to determine melanopsin function and signaling pathway in non-mammalian vertebrates, mainly in avian, amphibian and teleost cells. Despite the progress already achieved and reported to the agency in Brazil, the possibility to collaborate with one of the most prominent groups in the field has came forth us. Now we have the possibility to undertake studies on zebrafish photoentrainment in a very good research center outside the country.Dr Whitmore`s laboratory has been doing pioneer research on these subjects. Among its main achievements, the ability of peripheral organs and even cultured cells from the teleost zebrafish to detect light and directly entrain clock gene expression are noteworthy. In a very recent article, his group in collaboration with Dr. Foster`s group described the complete melanopsin gene screening in Danio rerio. Now, with the aid of new technologies not existent in Brazil, a more precise analysis will be possible. The present proposal aims to allow that a part of the main postdoctoral project in Brazil be carried as experience time in Dr. Whitmore`s lab, an excellence center in London. | |
