Abstract

This project is an addition to post-doctoral research currently under development, which advocates, in Brazilian visual arts, the presence of a trend that favors a descriptive representation of landscape as an index of originality and nationality, a trend that is directly related to pictorial works produced by European artists who visited and represented us. In this project, in order to gather support for the main project, we propose to study the descriptive tradition of Dutch art of the seventeenth century, in which the work of Dutch artists Frans Post and Albert Eckhout will be framed, and related to our proposal for a descriptive trend in the visual arts of Brazilian Romanticism and Modernism. As a second point in this project, we propose a study of the reception in Europe of Brazilian visual arts, especially that produced in the nineteenth century and the modernist works of the first half of the twentieth century. Thus, we close our circuit for the exchange of cultural images started with the investigation of Brazil's image produced by foreign artists, followed by the study of how this image was incorporated by Brazilian artists in their own self-representation, and finally, how this self-representation is received in the ancient cultural metropolis in which this model was originated.
