Abstract

First descriptions of fish of the South America, in particulary in Brazil, were done by European and North American researchers in the 18th century, derived of the big expeditions supported by the Brazilian emperors. So, all type specimens are deposited in the European and North American institutions. The exchange of this material with national institutions has been very hard, because there are restrictive law about biologic material importation, notwithstanding this material be kept on alcohol solution 70% and be inoffensive, offering no biological contamination. In this context, this project intend to visit the European museums (BMNH, IRSNB, MHNG, MNHN, MSNG, MTD, MZUT, NMW, NRM, SMF, ZMA, ZMB, ZMH, and ZMFK) with fish collections of Hyphessobrycon genus to do morphological analyses of the types, in special those which occur in the upper Paraná basin, besides of others Characidae types. The analyzed characters of these types material will allow the redescription of the species with current methodology, besides the solution about taxonomic questions related with the nomenclature of noun, as well as security to species identification.
