Abstract

Orange rust (Puccinia kuehnii) has been the most recent threat to sugarcane industry in Brazil. Due to yield loss it caused in susceptible varieties in other countries, they were soon identified and their multiplication interrupted all over Brazil. Nevertheless, orange rust continues to worry sugarcane pathologists since varieties with moderate resistance cover large areas and will not be replaced because severe disease symptoms will only occur under specific conditions. Two of these have been investigated under a FAPESP-Scientific Initiation (I.C.) fellowship, effect of pathogen concentration and nitrogen fertilization on expression of rust disease on moderate resistant varieties. The present application of research internship abroad (BEPE-I.C.) is an unique opportunity of learning for the student at The Louisiana State University, one of the leading institutions of the United States on sugarcane, more specifically with Prof. Jeffrey W. Hoy, a specialist on brown rust of sugarcane. Because his research focuses the same line of investigation, this training will be useful on her research on orange rust. (AU)
