Abstract

Gliomas are the most frequent and malignant tumors within the Central System Nervous (CNS) tumors. They are an incurable neoplasia, with a survival average of approximately 13 months, and less than 2% of the patients survive 5 years after the treatment. The low success in the treatment of these tumors is, in part, due to the low understanding of their molecular bases. The present project is divided in 3 parts: (a) identification of gains or losses in chromosomal regions of a set of gliomas (frozen tissue and primary culture) through CGH-array; (b) application of specific algorithms (Neighborhood Breakpoint Conservation) for the evaluation of structural variants, truncated genes and genetic fusions; (c) correlation of the data with the variables of the patients. We intend to identify, through a novel approach, genetic alterations that rule the evolution of gliomas, allowing the identification of potential biomarkers of diagnosis, prognosis and therapy response, fundamental for a new clinical approach on these tumors.
