Abstract

In Brazil, Farfantepenaeus paulensis and F. brasiliensis are both known as pink shrimps. The greatest difficulty on identification of these species takes place mainly at juvenile stages, when secondary sexual characters are still taking form, and the only way to discern them is observing the dorsal sulcus of the sixth somite. As a consequence of incontinent growth of fishery activities in the past and of the increasing of little boats in estuarine regions and natural nurseries, there is a clear decreasing of shrimp stocks along of Brazilian Coast. In this way, for the present study we propose to verify, using molecular and morphometric techniques, the identity of the species of the pink shrimps Farfantepenaeus paulensis and F. brasiliensis. We intend to compare the population stocks of these species in three different localities along of Southeast region coast, in São Paulo State. Will be tested, by molecular techniques, if morphological parameters used on identification of the species F. brasiliensis and F. paulensis are effective. It will be investigated the existence (or not) of variability (genetic and population) on F. brasiliensis and F. paulensis stocks in the study region, using morphometric and molecular techniques. Another objective is to seek, by morphometry, the most consistent morphological characters for identification of juvenile and adult stages of both species and, if molecular techniques show differences on these stocks among the localities, use it to separate them by this technique.
