Abstract

Cataract is one of the most common ocular diseases in dogs. Phacoemulsification is the most acceptable treatment therapy and the most cataract surgery routinely performed among ophthalmologists. Shortened surgical time, smaller incision size e minimal trauma are among the advantages of phacoemulsification. Uveitis, glaucoma, retinal detachment and corneal alteration due to endothelial damage are possible complications. Endothelial cellularity is an important factor to be considered for the surgical success, since endothelial cell damage may induce permanent corneal decompensation. High energy vibration of the ultrasonic tip and free radicals release may be traumatic to the corneal endothelial and cause decompensation. This research will evaluate the role of ascorbic acid on endothelial protection in dogs submitted to cataract surgery. Non-contact specular microscopy and the analysis of tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-±) in the aqueous humor will be performed.
