Abstract

This doctoral research intends to map the Townscape movement and to analyze how these ideas were received, assimilated and incorporated into the planning theories and practices of England, its country of origin as well as in other countries. It will comprise the Italian debate of the second post-war period, during which the Townscape principles provided possible solutions to urban problems arising from the lack of reconciliation between old and new and from the reconstruction of historic centres. It will evaluate the role of urban design in the critique of zoning and suburban sprawl in England and in the United States as well as the inclusion of this theme in Brazil through the presence of David Gosling and the seminars on Urban Design at the University of Brasilia in the 1980s. In addition to tracing the origin of Townscape and examine its principles and the controversies in its interior, we will introduce the most important actors within the Movement and that promoted, in different ways, the Townscape principles. We therefore believe that the British critic Ian Nairn, whose career and "campaign against subtopia" was the main focus of our Master, plays an important and largely overlooked role.
