Abstract

The layered silicate Na-RUB-18 presents crystal structure in two dimensions (2 D) and crystals with plate-like morphology. Each lamella consists in cages linked through five-membered rings of silicon tetrahedra and its inner surfaces are covered by silanol groups (Si-OH) and silanolate species (SiO-), which generate negative charges. These charges are balanced by Na+ cations octahedrally coordinated by water molecules in the interlayer space. The silanol groups of the surface are responsible for the chemical reactivity of the Na-RUB-18 and this material have high ion exchange capacity and selectivity because it ions Na+ can be exchanged by organic/inorganic ions. Thus their surface and interlayer space can be modified. However, the Na-RUB-18 has weak acidity and low external surface area (8 m2.g-1), which limits its application in heterogeneous catalysis. This PhD Project aims at isomorphously substituting framework silicon by Al, Fe, B, V and Ti into Na-RUB-18 structure, and at preparing pillared and/or exfoliated Na-[M]-RUB-18 which are applied into the model reaction of converting xylose to furfural. Additionally, zeolite [M]-RUB-24 (RWR) will be prepared through topotatic reaction by condensation of Si-OH neighboring groups. The materials obtained will be characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Solid-State Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR), Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA), Chemisorption Studies, Inductive Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectroscopy (ICP-OES and N2 adsorption.
