Abstract

To this end, I propose a detailed study of the novel's mechanisms of representation from the ongoing effects of his baroque language and the construction of the two leading figures, namely, the narrator and Santa Maria, according to the necessity of each passage, i.e. by means of the literary, the philosophical, the psychological, and what will be the emphasis of the approach of this study: the symbolic analysis, through the perspective of Mario Ferreira dos Santos (2007) regarding symbolic relationships of efficiency. Another issue to be addressed is the revelatory aspect of the text, based analogically on the topic of the Via Crucis, wherein the individual tentatively intertwines with the possibility of the sublime, establishing a certain human condition. Thus, I intend to analyze how the religious aspect of reality (verticality) coexists with that of the human being historicized (horizontality), resulting in an almost agonizing and aporetic situation, referring to dualistic patterns and its psychological effects on one's life (e.g. latency and patency, the image and reality, the mundane and the sublime).(AU)
