Abstract

Based in a perusal of the Novel Theory, with an emphasis on the studies that in the American scene received direct or indirect influence of Henry James's fiction and critical thought, this project aims, firstly, at examining the ethical and political dimensions of the characterological creation, especially, but not always, related to the Doppelganger presence, and, secondly, at exploring the associations of money with art and literature in the dawn of the 20th century. This research should contribute to the analysis of some uncharacteristic aspects of the study of James and his work - linking the ghostly double, for instance, to the phantasmagoric money message. It should also help us reflect on the connection between Machado de Assis and his "aliases", to borrow the term used by Augusto Meyer to define the narrator of Memórias Póstumas. Lastly we hope those two lines of research will assist with building stronger arguments regarding the narrative breakdown and the increasing formal disruptions commonly associated with literary modernism.
