Abstract

The extraction of information through the use of digital images is of great importance for various fields of knowledge such as Remote Sensing, Medicine, Biology, Materials Engineering, Cartography, among others. Among the various tools of Image Processing, Mathematical Morphology (MM) has been widely used to aid the process of feature extraction. Its use is due to the great potential of this tool in quantifying the size and shape of objects to be extracted. MM was prepared initially by Matheron (1975) and SERRA (1982) and consists in quantitatively describing geometric structures in the image by means of operations of erosion and dilation. Currently, due to the efficiency of the MM theory in image processing and analysis, various systems of morphological processing of images have been developed to assist various scientific fields. However, these systems work through the coupling of libraries or the Toolbox and thus have some shortcomings that make their use restricted. One such deficiency is the limited processing tests with large areas. The biggest problem is that the vast majority of software packages, libraries, or toolkits for morphological processing of images are not public domain, restricting access to users. Thus, based on what was passed, this project aims at developing a C language library morphological public domain for users in the field of cartography, to aid the process of extracting features of interest.(AU)
