Analysis of the presence of Candida albicans DNA in the saliva of bariatric patients

Abstract

Due to the increase in obesity prevalence and the growing performance of surgery for weight reduction, it is necessary to evaluate the oral conditions of these individuals. Bariatric surgery may or may not interfere with this process, depending on some systemic factors after surgery, still not well defined due to lack of studies on bariatric surgery and its relation to oral health. The aim of this will be to evaluate the presence of Candida albicans DNA in saliva of obese patients before and after bariatric surgery and to correlate the volume of salivary flow. Saliva samples collected from the assessment of the salivary flow of 55 patients indicated for bariatric surgery held in the three hospitals in the State of São Paulo and 50 patients with normal BMI (control group) will be used for detecting Candida albicans DNA by reactions of real-time PCR. DNA extraction will be performed at the Laboratory of Immunogenetics, Hospital for Rehabilitation of Craniofacial Anomalies (HRAC-USP). The results of this study could be helpful in identifying oral health problems which are accentuated after bariatric surgery, with the aim to identify possible etiologic factors to minimize, reduce or prevent their occurrence.(AU)
