Abstract

This work is intended to organize information on the introduction and spread of the bamboo flute shakuhachi in Brazil since the beginning of the 20th century to the present day by Japanese immigrants, considering the historical and ethnomusicological aspects of this process. The research is focused on the current usage of the instrument, as significant changes have been occurring into brazilian´s shakuhachi scenery such as as the introduction of the Dokyoku style and significant increase in non-Japanese Brazilians descendents practicing and teaching this art.
