Abstract

The development of biofluids for industrial applications has been a major concern for the LADFIT group (development laboratory of industrial fluid and tribology). Several formulations have been proposed mainly based on soybean oil, castor oil, palm oil. To suggest the application of biofluids, it is required a complete characterization of them, including the viscosity-temperature relationship, and in particular for use as a quenchant, determining the cooling characteristics. This paper proposes to study biofluids by checking these features and comparing them with mineral fluids, as well as by analyzing tempering performance on SAE 1045 and SAE 4140 steel samples and obtaining U curves. The cooling characteristics will be analyzed the cooling curves and their cooling rates followed by calculation of the heat transfer coefficients. The biofluids to be studied are soybean oil (with additives and other epoxidized), palm oil, and castor oil-based.(AU)
