Abstract

This project of research has as intention to analyze the present visual reference in The Crisis magazine during its first decade of existence, of 1910 to 1920, with the objective to perceive as, under the publishing of W. E. B. Du Bois, it expressed a new way to represent the image of the black to the North American society. The historical question that leads the research is to verify as, in a context marked for the strong racial segregation, the photograph use and presented diverse images in this periodic one, had assisted in the joint of a bigger dialogue between different parcels of the society. As initial hypothesis of the work, it is possible to say that this visual production, markedly influenced for Du Bois, tended to fight the rooted representation that it looked to portray of pejorative form the black and ideologically to erect in its being a self-confidence sense. In this context, when examining these images, condition the elaboration of the meanings that the conjunction between artistic production and militancy provides to the imaginary construction of the social one.
