Abstract

Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disease that can trigger a poor immune system response and a deficient wound healing process. Just little information is present in the literature regarding the bone grafts healing in diabetes set. The aim of this study is to describe and quantify the expression of a bone formation marker, i.e. osteocalcin, in the bone healing process after autogenous onlay graft, with or without resorbable collagen membrane, in the presence of diabetes mellitus . For this, 60 ninety-day old rats will be used (Rattus norvegicus, Albinus variation, Wistar), weighing around 300 grams, which will randomly be assigned into two experimental groups: Group Test 30 rats with diabetes induced by alloxan administration; Control group 30 rats presenting normoglycemy . It will be considered diabetic the animals whose blood glucose values reach 200 mg / dl or above. All animals will receive onlay grafts on the right and left sides of the lower jaw. The grafts on the left side will be covered with resorbable collagen membrane, while the grafts on the right side will be held without the covering of the membrane. The animals will be euthanized by cardiac perfusion after the following post-operative periods: 0 hour, 7, 14, 21, 45, and 60 days. Immunohistochemical analysis will be performed with the osteocalcin biomarker (AU)
