Abstract Temporomandibular Disorders (TMD) is a collective term that embraces a number of clinical problems involving the masticatory muscles, temporomandibular joint and associated structures. The prevalence of signs and symptoms of TMD in adolescents has been as frequent as in adults. This is a case-control study matched by gender and age. The sample will be teenagers 12-14 years old students from public schools in Araraquara, São Paulo. The case group will consist of painful TMD patients and controls without TMD. To characterize the sample socio-demographic, clinical (TMD, Body Mass Index (BMI), body pain) and behavioral information (parafunctional habits, physical activity and self-esteem) will be raised. To assess TMD the Research Diagnostic Criteria for TMD (RDC/TMD) Axis I will be applied and to classify nutritional status the BMI will be used. They will answer to the Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire for the identification of bodily pain and the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale for computation of self-esteem. Descriptive statistics and study of the association using the chi-square test (c2) will be carried out. A 5% level of significance will be adopted. Also it will be estimated odds ratio (OR) and prepared multiple logistic regression model to estimate the probability of developing TMD. | |
