Abstract

The aim of this study is to compare the effect of two different therapies, scaling and root planing (SRP) and periodontal debridement (DBR), on smokers with moderate chronic periodontitis. Twenty-four patients will be selected, twelve smokers (SP) and twelve non-smokers (NSP), who should have a minimum of 20 teeth in the mouth, distributed in 4 quadrants, and at least 8 teeth with a minimum depth of drilling (DD) of 5mm, with bleeding caused by grading, for clinical and microbiological analysis. They will be divided into groups SP and NSP and both groups will receive the two treatments: SRP (weekly by sextants) and DBR (consisting of a 45-minute-session using ultra-sonic instrumentation). The treatments will be determined at random, with two quadrants receiving SRP and two DBR, and executed by a researcher other than the examiner, and both will be trained and calibrated. Clinical parameters are Plaque Index (PI), SS, PS, and Clinical Attachment Level (CAL) for the whole month and for the 8 selected sites. After the treatments will be applied to these patients questionnaire assessing the degree of comfort, pain post-therapy, and perception of treatment. Levels of Porphyromonas gingivalis, Treponema denticola, and Tannerella forsythia will be evaluated using the PCR in real-time. These evaluations will be performed before treatment, firstly after initial therapy (PI), and then within 30 days, 3, and 6 months of treatment. The comparison of quantitative variables will be made through the analysis of variance, Tukey's test, and the chi-square test. Verification of correlation coefficient of Pearson and Spearman. In all tests significance level is 5%.(AU)
