Abstract

Ecosystem services assessment is being carried out in many world ecosystems, through their identification, classification and estimation of its economic values, which reflect their recuperation, degradation or maintenance costs. Traditional methodologies that are usually applied for these estimations present some restrictions concerning the limited number of ecosystem services considered in each study and the economic values obtained may be influenced by individual background knowledge. Exergy methodology is an innovative approach, because it comprises all ecosystem services of an ecosystem and as it is a biophysical study, its final results are not influenced by people's individual opinions. As hydrographic basins comprise interactions and processes between terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, it is essential to apply a study methodology that considers all components of these complex units. In Brazil, this complexity increases with the presence of many hydroelectric generation power plants along water bodies. Therefore, this study aims to assess the ecosystem services of a hydrographic basin without hydroelectric generation power plants (Baixo Pardo/Grande basin) and one with hydroelectric generation power plants (Tietê/Jacaré basin) in São Paulo State (Brazil), through exergy methodology, in order to verify the correlation between exergy values of each hydrographic basin, the quantity of ecosystem services offered and their total economic values.
