Polymorphism and cryptic species: understanding South American biodiversity through the genus Dendropsophus Fitzinger, 1843

Abstract

There has been, in the last years, a substantial increase in the propositions of species complexes, as a cryptic diversity, not recognizable by the means of traditional analyses, for amphibian species. However, the lack of an unified understanding of what is a "species complex" thwarts the critical analysis of the literature. There is also a shortage of studies that deal with phenotypical and molecular variation of the targeted taxon allied with a dense and comprehensive sampling of its geographical distribution. This trend is pronounced when studies target widespread species, especially Amazon-distributed species. Additionally, a significant fraction of those studies do not considerate available names, scarcely used in literature though, even when incorporating in their results individuals that could be assigned to those names. Using, as emphasis, a clade of the genus Dendropsophus, recently discovered in my PhD. thesis about the phylogeny of this genus, that resumes all problems listed above, I intend to perform a study that could state how many species are present in this clade. Analyses will integrate molecular and phenotypic data for the largest amount of local samples of the geographic distribution of the clade in order to describe and understand the variation found therein through the appropriate methods.
