Abstract

Arsenic (As) is a heavy metal distributed throughout the earth's crust, soil, sediment, water, air and living organisms. Thus, natural exposure to this metal becomes inevitable, characterizing it as an environmental contaminant with mutagenic, teratogenic and carcinogenic effects already described. Arsenic trioxide (As2O3), the form of trivalent arsenic is an inorganic compound which has recently been shown to be highly effective and widely used in treatment to reduce or eliminate acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL), once that therapy induces remission over 90% of cases. Patients diagnosed with early LPA can be cured with minimal or even no chemotherapy treatment if arsenic trioxide is used, since the doses capable of inducing the remission of the disease do not cause the same toxicity of that caused by chemotherapy.Given the increasing use of As2O3 as an alternative therapy for the treatment of leukemia and the lack of results on side-effects on male reproduction, it is appropriate to carry out this study, evaluating the immediate effects and after a period of discontinuation of treatment over the structure and function of reproductive male mice exposed to arsenic trioxide in adults in doses of 0.3 mg / kg and 3.0 mg / kg for 50 days. For this, we will investigate parameters such as weight of reproductive organs, sperm analysis (number and transit time of spermatozoa in the epididymis, motility and morphology), hormone levels, levels of arsenic in blood, histopathology of the testis and epididymis, and fertility test by natural mating.
