Abstract

It is foreseeable that the population and the production of goods, such as vehicles, will continue to grow. Consequently, so will the road accidents. It is mandatory to prevent from the risks and this can be done in three fronts: law, engineering, and education. Geographic information systems (GIS) can contribute mainly in engineering and education. In order to reduce the risks a road accident database is intended. The spatial distribution of traffic disasters will help to study and to research the causes and also contributes to inform the society. This project aims to build a GIS oriented to traffic safety to be delivered in the internet. Public authorities produce the official data related to this matter in general in text or table mode for a restrict personnel. The contribution will also be another step to new opportunities for mobile mapping systems and technology to acquire georeferenced images and to provide spatial visualization for decision making. Particularly, this project continues the scientific initiation work recently concluded.
