Abstract

Although ubiquitous environmental organisms, nontuberculous mycobacteria can cause opportunistic infections in humans, especially the species belonging to M. chelonae-M. abscessus group. Until recently, this group was composed of M. chelonae, M. abscessus, M. immunogenum M. bolletii, M. massiliense and M. salmoniphilum. Taxonomic changes in this group have been proposed including the unification of M. abscessus, M. massiliense e M. bolletii in a single species (M. abscessus) with two subspecies (M. abscessus subsp. abscessus and M. abscessus subsp. bolletii) and the inclusion of Mycobacterium franklinii in M. chelonae-M. abscessus group. Several commercial kits are available for rapid mycobacteria identification such as INNO-LiPA and Genotype. The first one separates the mycobacteria of M. chelonae-M. abscessus group in clusters (CHI, CHIII e CHII/CHIV). Considering the importance of correct species identification in this group for outbreak surveillance and clinical management of patients, this project aims to analyze M. chelonae-M. abscessus group isolates with inconclusive species classification. Moreover, this project also aims to analyze the taxonomic classification of a collection of CHII cluster isolates. The results of this work will contribute to epidemiological analysis and future outbreaks surveillance. (AU)
