Abstract Contradictory results have been obtained in studies comparing the effects of crossmodal and unimodal exogenous attention. Both similar and different effects have been reported. The study performed in Brazil contrasted the capacity of these two kinds of attention to exclude external noise and enhance target signal. The results suggest that crossmodal attention, similarly to unimodal attention, excludes external visual noise and enhances visual signal. The facilitatory action of crossmodal attention on visual signal takes, however, more time to occur than that of unimodal attention. These results suggest that mechanisms of crossmodal attention take longer to be complete than the mechanisms of unimodal attention. This hypothesis can be confirmed through event-related potentials (ERP). The latency of the N2pc will be longer for crossmodal attention than for unimodal attention whether the attentional mechanisms are responsible for the delay observed. The ERP techniques will be learned in the internship in London and they will be applied subsequently in Brazil. (AU) | |
