Abstract

The decomposition rates of organic residues or, the potential of soils stock carbon is directly dependent on climate, geological origin and soil management practices. Recently, it was introduced in the literature the concept that there is an upper limit of C stocking, or a saturation limit in accordance with the level of addition of residues, which is under improvement and consolidation. The occurrence of saturation C in long-term experiment with high input of C has been demonstrated by the reduced efficiency in stock C in the soil. The use of mathematical modeling can help us in estimating the saturation level of C in the soil, not only for allowing the integration of biogeochemical data obtained in the field, but also enable the evaluation of the impact of different soil management practices and the use of residues in the emissions of greenhouse gases and carbon sequestration in the soil. The objective of this project is to estimate the saturation level of C in soils cultivated with sugarcane under different management practices, using the Century Ecosystem Model to simulate the soil organic matter (SOM). For this, will be simulated the long-term effect on the dynamics of SOM, considering changes in land use (conversion of native vegetation to sugarcane), and the effect of changing in the soil management, considering the transition from conventional with burned to no burned, and later, to conservation management; with use organic residues.
