Abstract

The aim of this work is to understand the synergism and the role of some metals (M = Pt, Au and Rh) and Ce in water-gas shift reaction and steam reforming of methane, by probing M/CeO2-Al2O3 catalysts under reaction conditions. Both reactions are important to produce pure H2, a strategic energy carrier for several technologies. For that, a multi-technique approach using synchrotron radiation will be explored under operando conditions. Two kinds of experiments are planed; the first one is to combine either X ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) or X ray diffraction (XRD) with infrared spectroscopy (DRIFTS) coupled with a mass spectrometer to obtain time-resolved information about the oxidation state, particle size, structure and species formed at the catalyst surface as a function of reaction conditions (temperature and gas feed) and catalyst preparation method. The QuXAS/DRIFTS and HXRD/DRIFTS experiments will be performed at ESRF, France, at BM23 or ID24 and ID15, respectively. The second type of experiment is to observe spatial-resolved characteristics of the catalysts, through the catalytic bed, using for this a capillary reactor, leading to a complete mapping of the parameters that influence the performance of the catalysts.
