Abstract

The mammal collection of the Museum of Vertebrate Zoology at Berkeley (MVZ) has a broad collection of California's mammals. Almost 100 years ago, its first director, Joseph Grinnell, collected extensively throughout California, carefully recording details, such as the collection site and habitat for each specimen collected. In 2003, the MVZ started the "Grinnell Project" which is consistently revisiting the same Grinnell's locations with the purpose of analyzing possible changes in the mammal's community. The main PhD project of the student is part of the "Grinnell Project" and intends to study the morphological changes that might have occurred in a group of species collected in both periods. The project also intends to analyze the evolutionary processes responsible for the observed changes (natural selection or genetic drift). Therefore, it is essential for the execution of the main project that the student has the opportunity to spend time at Berkeley, seeing that all specimens are deposited in the MVZ. In addition, the research internship abroad would provide the opportunity for the student to participate on field trips and thus have an experience in situ with the species that are going to be part of the student's thesis.
