Abstract

Among hot stars, one class has been extensively studied by modern techniques: the Be stars. Mainly due to interferometry, which is capable of angularly resolving their circumstellar environment and even their photosphere, much progress have been achieved to our understanding of physical processes of great astrophysical interest such as stellar rotation, dynamical processes in astrophysical disks, kinematic viscosity, etc. The objective of this work is to investigate the recent history of Achernar, the nearest Be star. For this purpose, we will use a large set of observational data, such as AMBER spectro-interferometry (VLTI/ESO), FEROS spectroscopy (ESO) and optical polarimetry (OPD/LNA). Our dataset is, undoubtedly, the best set of observations available for any Be star to date. The radiative transfer code HDUST will be used to analyze and interpret the observational dataset, aiming at obtaining a realistic physical model of the circumstellar environment in interaction with the stellar photosphere. It is proposed an academic visit at the University of Nice (France), where the student will spend one year working with Prof. Dr. Armando Domiciano de Souza. This will support and strengthen the existing collaboration between the advisor and the Interferometry Group of Nice. (AU)
