Abstract

This research project aiming at evaluating the effect of gate location on 5HS toughened carbon fiber/RTM6 epoxy resin by performing fatigue test in mode I loading and analyzing the crack growth behavior through this toughened fabric. The 500 mm length mold is separated by an inlet gate and a vent gate where a release tape will be placed within a preform in their respective locations along the 300 mm width mold in order to induce an initial crack for fatigue evaluation in mode I loading (producing double cantilever beam - DCB specimens). The process cycle can take more than an hour, and consequently the first section of the preform will be exposured to resin for the entirely process cycle, besides the effect of the pressure gradient along the mold. The performance of both sides will be evaluated. It will be taken into account a more general fatigue test, regarding interactions with different damage mechanisms are considered, and therefore a fatigue prediction model might be developed. During the research period a follow up in the biaxial fatigue test will be included in the project chronogram. (AU)
