The area of multifunctional composites is constantly expanding once its use allows designing materials that do not only have the function of mechanical support but also add thermal, electrical, magnetic characteristics. Besides, it is essential that the laminate obtained promotes a reduction of the mass and volume of the system, thus increasing its efficiency. In this work, the interlaminar fracture toughness of carbon fiber/poly(ether-imide) (PEI) and carbon fiber/poly(aryl ether ketone) (PAEK) reinforced multi-walled carbon nanotube buckypapers will be investigated. Buckypaper morphology will be analyzed via transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The contribution of adding buckypapers in the viscoelastic properties will be studied using dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) from the study of A, B, C factors and entanglement degree of the laminates. Interlaminar tests will be performed on Double Cantilever Beam (DCB) and End-Notch Flexure (ENF) specimens in static and dynamic conditions. This work will explore the feasibility of using carbon nanotubes to obtain polymer composites reinforced with buckypapers and give then applicability in structural applications. Also, it gives continuity to other projects already undertaken in this area by this research group to which this study is linked. (AU)
