Abstract

Technological advances in polymer composite area have been created new opportunities for high-performance and lightweight structures, promoting the development of strategic systems in several sectors of industry such as aerospace field. In this work carbon fiber based poly(ether imide) composite filled with multiwalled carbon nanotubes will be obtained by hot pressing technique. In order to evaluate the influence of adding carbon nanotubes to the composite, this material will be evaluated by fatigue tests at 200 000 cycles (number of cycles required in the aeronautical field), at sub-zero temperature (-60ºC), room temperature (25ºC) and high temperature (+80ºC). In addition, a numerical simulation will be performed. After these tests, a study involving fractographic assessment in order to evaluate possible changes in failure modes with the addition of carbon nanotubes will be made. Also, this work will explore the feasibility of using carbon nanotubes to obtain polymer composites commonly used in structural applications in the aerospace field, giving continuity to other projects already undertaken in this area by this research group to which this research is linked.
