Abstract

Although not very long, the works of Adam Smith show a wide range of themes. The burn of almost all of his manuscripts little before his death in 1790 and the publishing of only two books - The Theory of Moral Sentiments (1759) and An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of the Nations (1776) - aside some apparently minor texts, made Smith become known either as a moral philosopher or a political economist. Beyond these two metonymical apprehensions of the smithian work, this work will in the parts qhat makes the whole: the smithian speculation. Under this point of view stands out his theory of imagination, ground over which are build not only his morality, jurisprudence, economics and politics, but also his epistemology, aesthetics, theology, in a word, his philosophy.
