Abstract

This research is going to focus on silence and its narrative configuration in two recent Brazilians films, Cleopatra, 2007, and The Herb of the Rat, 2008, both by Julio Bressane. The study will attempt to describe and analyse the construction of the moments of silence in the films in order to understand the performance and role that the 'absence of sound' may represent in the context in which it is disposed. The main goal is to analyse how the sound design builds the silence and how its presence affects the narratives of both films as well as the viewer's perception of the moving images.
