Abstract

The dissertation project part of a comparative analysis of the central characters of the novels The Posthumous Memoirs of Bras Cubas (1881) Machado de Assis, and The Testament of Mr. Nepumoceno (1989) Germano Almeida drawing a parallel between periods and different geographical areas in which lie works. The novels bring in its core representative character of the bourgeois class of his time, showing, from them, a process of cultural globalization that begins in the nineteenth century, as seen in the work of Machado, and enters with force, by the twentieth century perceived on the novel by Adams. With this, the characters gain a transnational and hybrid tone. Machado de Assis (1839-1908) and Germano Almeida (1945 -) are writers in the literary representative of their countries, which besides having significant literary works, engaged in reflections on the construction of the literary system of their countries and participated in discussions about the training process.Thus, the study intends to investigate the similarities and differences in the pattern of characters starting from the conception of the subject and transnational cultural formation of national identity, tracking a moving historical/cultural/literary legacies of colonial countries and their passage insertion system world by the affirmation of a "authentic national" literature.
