Abstract

INTRODUCTION: The introduction of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART), resulted in decrease of the incidence of HIV-Associated Dementia (HAD), however, in the past few years patients, long-term infected, including those well controlled systemically infected individuals , began to complain about memory problems, slow-thinking and difculties in concentration. Neurological disorders associated with HIV affect quality of life, productive working function and adherence to HAART, which can then affect the control of systemic infection. In this scenario it appears that HAD is a major source of morbidity in HIV-1. Many potential markers have been studied, but so far none of them proved to be useful in clinical practice alone, so it is necessary to determine an objective, quantitative, and scalable profile markers to HAND. OBJECTIVE: To establish a panel of markers related to neurological disorders associated with HIV-1. METHODS: 80 samples of peripheral blood and cerebrospinal fluid of patients with positive serology for HIV-1 will be evaluated, including 40 diagnosed with asymptomatic neurocognitive impairment, 40 diagnosed with mild/moderate neurocognitive disorder, 40 samples diagnosed with HIV-associated dementia and 40 samples with no neurocognitive disorder (control group). To determine virological markers the proposal is to quantify the viral load of HIV-1 and HERV-K in CSF. The neurofilaments (NFL) will be investigated in cerebrospinal fluid samples as indicator of brain injury. To determine the profile of the host immunological response we will investigate the LPS levels in plasma and 42 cytokines in CSF.
