Abstract In the context of mammalian health, the cancer is among the most important diseases in terms of occurrence rates, especially in humans. Neoplasias, besides the genetic causes, are also a consequence of harmful habits. Thus, the urgency need for selective and nontoxic anticancer drugs, against the mechanisms of multidrug resistance, is critical. This is not only interesting for science, but for the economy. The pharmaceutical industry tends to prioritize the researches for untapped activities of known compounds from the nature, particularly the phytochemicals. Many plant secondary metabolites have apoptosis-related cytotoxicity, which is intriguing to pharmacology. Currently, the evolution of therapy emphasized the polyphenols inhibition of topoisomerases, carcinogenic markers. Among these flavonoids, chalcones stand out. In the present work, the cytotoxicity, genotoxicity, inhibition of topoisomerases and pro-apoptotic potential by chalcones will be evaluated in one healthy and five tumor cell lines, through MTT, LDH and AO/EB staining tests, comet assay and gene expression analysis. The aim of this study is to improve the existing knowledge from an underexplored approach, providing information about different cell lines, thereby contributing to the development of formulations for prevention and/or reversal of cancer. | |
