Abstract

This research work aims at assessing the power grid performance under distinct contingencie scenarios in a competitive market context with multiple energy sources. The main goals are: 1) Introduce a module for security assessment and validation of the Unit Commitment Model, using AC power flow simulation; this module will be part of the SMART-ISO suite of strategic models; 2) This new module will address the following issues: Validate network feasibility of the DC-optimal-power-flow-approximation-based UC solution through an AC power flow simulation; Evaluate and enumerate the contingencies that are part of the security assessment; Simulate the optimal UC solution under these contingencies, analyze its feasibility, and, if necessary, devise constraints to be added to the UC model, in order to improve the security of the transmission grid; Re-run the UC model and repeat the cycle until the desired level of stability is reached (where the "desired" level is to be defined); Use parallel computation to speed up the run-time of the new module; 3) Publishing: At least one article in a prestigious ISI indexed journal on Power Systems; At least one paper in a renewed congress on Power Systems.
