Abstract

The project comprises a set of goals to be achieved with frogs in the Atlantic Forest in collaboration with a colleague at Cornell University and with the participation of masters and doctoral students. The main objectives pursued in this proposal are: 1) to analyze the DNA of some species of frogs from different localities of the Atlantic Forest, 2) collect data on the incidence and prevalence of the fungus Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd), a pathogen that can pose a serious threat to high diversity of frogs from Brazil, 3) use target species in studies covering biogeography, comparative philogeography and population genetic structure, to a better understanding of evolutionary processes in the Atlantic Forest and 4) examine the osteology of some species through the technique of micro- computed tomography, to obtain data to be used in taxonomy and systematics. One of the limiting factors in the conservation of the species is the lack of information on the taxonomy, basic biology, history and diversity in populations of species potentially threatened or endangered. This study will examine the issues from basic taxonomy to evolutionary forces that lead to differentiation among amphibian populations Atlantic Forest and quantify how this genetic differentiation is distributed in a fragmented landscape. This information is important for prioritizing and managing the remaining fragments of the Atlantic Forest. (AU)
