Abstract

The time-compressed speech test has recently been standardized and made available in Brazilian Portuguese in the evaluation manual of auditory processing - Pereira and Schochat, 2011. This project seeks to verify the applicability of this test in the elderly in order to know the aging ability of auditory closure. For that will be evaluated a study group made up of 20 elderly patients with complaints of difficulty understanding rapid speech (self-reported), distributed in two age groups: 60-69 years and 70-79 years, each comprising ten individuals. Also, will be constituted a comparison group of 20 elderly people without the complaint with complaints of difficulty understanding rapid speech, distributed in the same proportion under the age mentioned. Included will be elderly speakers of Brazilian Portuguese, with the presence of symmetrical hearing, and hearing level with thresholds less than or equal to 55 dB HL in both ears, agreeing to participate in the tender and sign the term of consent. And deleted the elderly with evidence in the clinical history of neurological and psychiatric diseases disabling, presence of hearing level greater than 55 dB HL; the presence of asymmetry in hearing level between the ears; present ages equal to or greater than 80 years, that did not sign the term of consent. The procedures of the study will be a time-compressed speech test and scale of auditory behaviors. This is expected to relate to the recognition of compressed speech with complaints of difficulty understanding rapid speech (self-reported) in the elderly and compare the data according to age, ears, and presence or absence of the complaint.
