Abstract

Among the parasitic diseases affecting mainly children can high ligth the Visceral Larva Migrans Syndrome (VLMS) caused by Toxocara canis, one of the most common helminthes in dogs. Infection of humans occurs by ingestion of eggs containing viable larvae or the parasite, which pass through the small intestine, reach the blood stream and migrate over long periods in different host tissues. One of the main consequences of this infection is the marked increase mainly of eosinophils in the lungs and blood stream, and increases serum IgE. Previous work investigation the function od eosinophils and APC suggested that one of the best immunoregulatory role of eosinophil is to fuction as an antigen presenting cell, especially during infection by helmints. Recently, some authors havr shown that eosinophils stimulated with GM-CSF under experimental conditions is capable of expressing MHC II, CD80 and CD86, suggesting that these cells can act as APC in vivo in different diseases incluing asthma chronic eosinophilic pneumonia anda various parasitic diseases. Research in our laboratory have shown that eosinophils have the ability to express coestimulatorias molecules (CD80, CD86) and MHC II molecules in ex vivo model of VLMS. However, these observations are not sufficient to prove that eosinophils may act as a functional APC. Futhermore, evidence of this important role and knowledge of how eosinophils act as APC is still poorly understood, specially in the context of Toxocara canis. Thus, we will investigate how eosinophils are presented as APC stimulation using antigen of T. canisKeywords: eosinophils, APC, Visceral Migrans Syndrome
