Abstract

Whit the results obtained until now, we have two unresolved questions: i) What is the origin and the nature of certain phases which does not show any electron diffraction pattern when evaluated by transmission electron microscopy on diffraction mode; ii) The presence of oxygen was confirmed by measurements of a LECO equipment and by the decrease in the glass forming ability, however it could not be detected neither by scanning electron microscopy (BSE and EDS) nor by transmission electron microscopy (EDS and HRTEM). Both questions do not have any reported answer in literature. Furthermore, having samples of similar compositions with minor Y addition gives us the possibility of comparing all these results. As Prof. Kaufman is renowned in electron microscopy area, the objective is study the influence of the oxygen and that the IC student learns more about electron microscopy techniques. (AU)
