Abstract

The field of family therapy has been developed based on different theoretical and epistemological contributions. One of the recently developments of familiy therapy has taken place based on the contributions of the social constructionist movement in science, leading to an emphasis on the communication processes in the therapeutic context. Despite this increasingly expansion of social constructionists ideas in the field of family therapy, there is a scarcity of empirical studies about this theme. Thus, it is importante to know how it is that the knowledge from the theoretical field is incorporated into clinical practices. The aim of this study is to understand how Brazilian family therapists who apply the contributions of the social constructionist movement in their clinical practices make sense of both their career and their professional identity. We will interview 11 family therapists. Each participant will answer a semi-structured interview, which will be recorded in mp3 and transcribed. In order to analyze this information, we will use a qualitative method of thematic analysis, namely the analysis of the meaning making process of discursive practices. This analysis will be carried out through the following steps: (a) exhaustive reading of the transcripts; (b) identification of the main themes discussed; (c) creation of categories of analysis; and (d) creation of dialogical maps, which illustrate the meaning negotiation about the selected themes. Thus, we hope to understand how the social constructionist movement has influenced the clinical practices and the career of Brazilian family therapists, and to contribute with a critical reflection about the development of social constructionism in Brazil.
