Abstract Quintilian's Institutio Oratoria is a complex work which is important to Classical Studies in many of its aspects, among which we point Literary Criticism, Rhetoric and Education in Antiquity. However, there isn't a complete translation of the Institutio available in Portuguese. Among its twelve books, Book II is specifically an intermediate between expositions of pedagogical technique and rhetorical theory. It both offers specific exercises (progymnasmata) to the Rhetoric teacher (rhetor) and discusses theoretical principles which must be followed through the rest of the work. Therefore, it deserves an academic translation, with clarifying comments on historical circumstances, theoretical positioning, technical terminology and dialogues with tradition. | |
