Abstract Part of a wider research on the tops of theatrum mundi as employed by Marcus Tulius Cicero, this project aims to investigate the presence of tragedy (and of the life represented as tragedy) in his work, namely in Pro Sestio (56 B.C.). Analysis of this speech will be compared to references to tragic works (specially the Atreus of Accius) noticed in the De oratore (55 B. C.) as well as in the De Officiis (43 a.C.). The hypothesis of the project is that effects of references to tragic drama in Ciceronian works are more comprehensive than normally regarded. Concerning Pro Sestio they involve structural aspects, transmission of the text, as well as "orality" and delivery (actio) of the speech. (AU) | |
