Abstract

The Southern Ocean fauna has a high degree of diversity and endemism. However, studies concerning marine biodiversity are still scarce, mainly considering geographic distribution analyses and areas of endemism. The aim of this project is to infer the patterns of endemism of benthic hydroids (Anthoathecata and Leptothecata) from Argentinean and Chilean Patagonia, and antarctic continent. The search of these patterns will be focused on a comparison between the Patagonian and Antarctic faunas, and on the characterization of the geographical distributions of the species. For this purpose, samples of Patagonian and Antarctic benthic hydroids from the Invetebrate Collection of the National Museum of Natural History (NMNH, Smithsonian Institution) will be observed and their data of geographic distribution will be documented. Faunistic analyses will be performed by inferences of faunistic similarity between the localities sampled and by estimation of frequency of occurrence of benthic hydroids species and families found by latitudinal zone. Analyses of geographical distribution aiming to infer areas of endemism will be performed using two distinct methodologies: optimization by the software NDM-VNDM and Parsimony Analysis of Endemicity (PAE).
