Abstract

The removal of organic pollutants in the environment has been a major technological challenge, because many times, conventional treatment technologies are not able to do it efficiently. The use of reactors has been quite effective in decreasing the organic load in wastewater, reaching efficiencies of up to 98% in UASB type reactors. A disadvantage of the reactors is the hydraulic retention time (HRT), since in some cases it takes days to obtain good treatment results. However, the anaerobic reactors allow the insertion of the biological compounds or even the addition of other micro-organisms with known characteristics desired in the system. Surfactants and biosurfactants have proven effective in the treatment and remediation of contaminated soil, forming micelles and reducing the surface tension, thus increasing the bioavailability of polar substances in aqueous media. The wastewater from the dairy industry are characterized by high organic load in terms of lipids, proteins, carbohydrates, fatty acids and long chain concentration of suspended solids from the process of washing floors and equipment. In this project we will investigate the efficiency of surfactants and biosurfactants in anaerobic compartmented cylindrical (RACoC) and anaerobic reactors like UASB, seeking greater efficiency at a lower HRT, through analysis of physico-chemical parameters such as COD, pH, turbidity, total solids and volatile.
