Abstract

It is being under development by the research group of the supervisor of this project the iDWing, a novel non-conventional data warehousing environment aimed at storing and retrieving images in decision-support applications. In the current phase of development, iDWing introduces the following distinctive good properties: (i) it extends the star-schema of a conventional data warehouse to also incorporate a dimension table specifically designed to store image data; (ii) it defines a strategy aimed to extract, translate and load image data into the extended data warehouse; and (iii) it introduces a range query algorithm to perform analytical queries based on similarity over the image data warehouse. This project focuses on introducing extensions to iDWing through the development of the imageDW-index, a data structure aimed to index image data warehouses, i.e. the imageDW-index is aimed at the efficient processing of analytical queries extended with image similarity predicates. Although there are a number of approaches in the literature that propose indices for data warehouses and indices for complex data separately, there is not an approach that investigate these two issues in the same set-ting. Therefore, the project aims to investigate a gap in the literature of data warehouse related to the proposal of strategies to efficiently manipulate image data in the processing of analytical queries.
