Abstract

This project aims to realize further theoretical study of the methodology of jazz improvisation practice, which is widely employed in Brazilian academic institutions teaching popular music performance. Continuing our doctoral research (CÔRTES, 2012), we intend to intensify the dialogue between jazz procedures and the teaching of improvisation in Brazilian music through a post-doctorate research visit to the San Francisco State University, and field work at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), and the Berklee College of Music. Among the main activities of the research visit proposed here are an analysis of courses and activities related to the practice of improvisation, regular meetings with Prof. Dr. Hafez Modirzadeh (supervisor) for theoretical discussions and sessions of musical practice, and participation in important academic and artistic events that promote the publication, diffusion, and evaluation of our research results. We believe that this research visit will make a decisive contribution to our post-doctoral research, whose objective is the development and teaching of a course plan related to the practice of improvisation in Brazilian music at the Undergraduate Program in Popular Music at UNICAMP.
